Hemlock is a 12 year old girl who resides at 211 B baker street. She looks at Sherlock as a rival. Hemlock and her associate, 12 year old Edward, consult with the police to help solve crimes. The police reluctantly accept her help because she is good at what she does.

When orphans start going missing, Hemlock jumps on the case. I rather like the way the case plays out. Being a fan of fairytales, the fairytale aspect of this book was really fun. It was done in its own way, and the originality of that makes this book an enjoyable read.

Hemlocks personality is so much like Sherlocks, but she is her own person. Edward is the caution behind the recklessness that is Hemlock, just as Watson plays that part for sherlock. It is really fun to see these characters brought to life in such a different way.

I loved the characters, the plot, the mystery. It has all the amazing aspects of Sherlock Holmes with a small twist. I couldn’t put the book down. The strangeness of the case just pulls you in.

5 stars for Hemlock Jones!

The story is very well written, The characters are really fun, The mystery is captivating in its own way, the originality is refreshing. I highy enjoyed reading this book and if you like Sherlock, or Strange mysteries, so will you.

Well Done Justin!

Then Came Darkness – By: D. H. Schleicher – Review

Book:

Summer. 1936. Upstate New York. First, the banks were coming for their farms. Then, a record heat wave scorched the land. And then came Joshua Bloomfield, driven by revenge and greed, seeking to reclaim an inheritance of blood money and the family he believed was rightfully his. Will Evelyn Kydd find a way to save her farm and protect her family from the monster in their midst, or will they all be devoured by the darkness descending upon the hills?

Author:

D. H. Schleicher is the author of the independent novels Then Came Darkness and The Thief Maker, and his writing has appeared in Underground Voices, Scratch, The Eunoia Review, LitNoir , and Wonders in the Dark . You can follow his blog TheSchleicherSpin.com where he shares his views on books, movies, and travel. He hails from the South Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia where he lives with his wife and son.

Then Came Darkness is full of mystery and suspense. Once the story started to progress I could not put it down! From the very beginning of the book you are already trying to figure out the mysteries that are to come.

The setting and plot of this book is like nothing I have read before. The originality behind it was very refreshing for me. I enjoyed seeing a different side of life from a different time. The way the issues are dealt with, the punishments, the health problems, the social interactions are so different from how things are today.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Everything about it was well done. I enjoyed the setting, characters, plot, all of it.

5 Stars!

Well Done!

The Art of Sherlock Holmes – USA Edition 1 – By: Phil Growick – Review.

The Art of Sherlock Holmes-USA Edition 1 is truly unique. While there have been literally hundreds of Holmes pastiches written before our first volume, The Art of Sherlock Homes-West Palm Beach, there had never been a volume where Holmes short stories were interpreted by such accomplished artists.

In this first USA edition, thirteen world-class artists who live and create in the United States have each had a story assigned to them – specifically dependent on the particular talent of each artist. Whether the interpretations be from the forms of surrealist, contemporary, realist, digital, minimalist, symbolism, or an amalgam of various forms, each piece of art created is unique, hypnotic, mesmerizing and unforgettable.  Each created specifically to express the essence of each incredible Holmes story.

The thirteen stories herein range from the impossibly baffling (except for Holmes) to the humorous, paranormal, or simply intellectually intricate. You’re presented with murder, theft, treason, betrayal, love, loss and greed. All the ingredients to make delicious Holmes meals of mystery. But please remember, art is in the eye of the beholder. So we hope you’ll appreciate each creation for what it is: an inimitable interpretation of a truly unique Holmes story.

For those of you who get lost in abstract art, our abstract artists have provided an explanation of what their art means in relation to the story they’ve interpreted.

The Art of Sherlock Holmes books are curated by Phil Growick, himself a renowned Holmes author.

Phil Growick
Phil Growick ran one of the world’s leading executive search firms in the advertising industry. Phil’s network in the creative world is unparalleled which is perfect for artist acquisition. Now living in West Palm, Phil is heavily involved in the local art community and as a two-time Sherlock Holmes novelist came up with the concept of combining two of his passions – art and Holmes.

This book was completely different from anything I have read before. It is full of short stories told by our favorite Doctor and detective, Watson and Holmes. The character personalities were spot on and the stories blew me away.

It can be difficult to capture the attention of a reader in such a short span and keep them hooked throughout. Every single one of these stories had me captured and mesmerized until the very end.

One of the best parts about this book is the Art. You get to read about the Author and Artist of the story, then get to look at the Art created for the story, then the story it self. I would study each piece of work to try to figure out the story. After you finish the story I would highly suggest going back to the Art and having a second look and seeing what you missed.

This book is filled with so much talent, I am honored to have the chance to read and review it.

I will now show a few pieces of the many beautiful works of Art for this Novel.

No Vacancy – by: Bonnie Randall – Review

Book Description:

There’s always room…

When therapist Lucas Stephen’s sister returns from a legendary Los Angeles hotel, she’s a shell of the artist she once was. Nearly catatonic, deteriorating rapidly, Michelle alarms Lucas by painting the same old-style straight razor over and over.

Heartbroken and frightened, Lucas resolves to find out what happened to her. With his beautiful—and psychic—colleague Della, Lucas travels to L.A., booking a room in the hotel Michelle stayed at.

They barely cross the threshold when Della senses evil. She sees bodies falling out of the sky. Broken dreams. Imprisoned nightmares. She begs Lucas to leave, but the hotel makes both time and truth shift, and when Lucas looks into the mirror in his sister’s room, he sees the straight razor—and is drawn to the bright, scarlet stain of fresh blood…

From the Author:

Insatiable for real-life mysteries, I tripped over the Elisa Lam story one afternoon, the strange case of a young woman who vanished while staying at the notorious Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles…only to be discovered after residents complained of foul tasting, discolored water in their drinking glasses and showers. Searching for the source of the water contamination, hotel staff surely found it – Elisa was dead and decaying in one of the hotel’s rooftop water tanks.
Elisa’s disappearance, and most certainly her last known moments (immortalized in some of the most bizarre CCTV footage I’ve ever seen) sent me down a rabbit hole both disturbing and horrifying. For many sleepless nights I just couldn’t get The Cecil off my mind. I had to let it live–and maybe even attempt to control it–through one of my own stories…thus No Vacancy was borne

About the Author:

Bonnie Randall lives in a forest at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada.
Scribbling stories in coil-bound notebooks from the age of 9, Bonnie’s first attempts at prose featured wicked dolls, evil grandmothers–oh, and a romantic hero who just happened to be a professional ice hockey player (go figure).

Clearly much has changed yet nothing has changed; Bonnie is still a sucker for true love, soul mates, smudgy shadows and things that go bump in the night.Yet while writing has been the passion, social work has been the calling and, within a career spent in both Child Protection and addictions counseling, Bonnie has come to believe that it is our relationships–with people and environments–that shape our souls and craft what, ultimately, becomes the human experience.

A Scorpio to the core, Bonnie’s passion is, well, passion–and mysticism, creepiness, and all things arcane. Her stories explore what love looks like in the face of paranormal peril for “Till death do us part” is, after all, only an illusion…

Love never dies…

No Vacancy is a short read full of horror and emotions. The book starts and you already have multiple questions, and when it ends you have an entirely new set of questions. The mystery behind this story is very interesting, and creepy. I enjoy that multiple secrets still lay beyond in that hotel.

The characters work well with each other, and the story. The personalities and emotions are relatable. The setting is scary, and it’s what makes this read all the more chilling.

I made the mistake of reading this at night, and in the dark with just my kindle light. Needless to say when I finally convince myself to get up and pee, every light was turned on as I went. This story weaves its way into your mind, and makes your eyes play tricks on you, Which is how you know it is a fantastic horror read.

Beautifully written and filled with horror, I enjoyed every second of this short story!

5 bright shining stars to lead your way out of the dark when you finish this book!

Great Job Bonnie!!

The Book:

Reluctantly, Sherlock Holmes agrees to assist Inspector Lestrade who is being hounded by an obnoxious nobleman whose jewel-encrusted dagger has gone missing. However, what Holmes initially believes to be a simple theft turns out instead to be his first encounter with a master criminal, who is as ruthless as he is brilliant, and whom Watson dubs “The Merchant of Menace.”

Soon Holmes finds himself matching wits with a man who will steal anything – if the price is right. Moreover, this thief will go to any lengths, including blackmail and murder, to achieve his desired goal.

As Holmes comes to understand his adversary, he also begins to realize he can only react to the Merchant because he has no idea where this criminal mastermind will strike next. All Holmes knows for certain is the Merchant seems to specialize in priceless, one-of-a-kind articles. Will that be enough information for the Great Detective to outwit his foe?

From the British Museum to the Louvre to Blenheim Palace, Holmes finds himself in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Set against the backdrop of early Edwardian England, the Great Detective and his Boswell encounter an array of luminaries from the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough to a young Winston Churchill.

For fans of Conan Doyle’s immortal detective, the game is always afoot. However, this time around Holmes must try to bring to justice a villain who might well be the next Napoleon of Crime.

As a huge Sherlock fan I was beyond thrilled to pick up this book. I will admit I was a little concerned about the finishing it. Although I love Sherlock, Sir Arthur Conan Doyles stories tend to get a little stale before becoming good. I will say with certainty this was not the case here. I picked up this book and I could not put it down. It kept me up at night just to finish it. It grabs your attention and runs away with it. Before you know it, its hours later and you’re a bit confused on where your day went.

The characters were the best of Sherlock and Watson. You can feel the companionship coming off the pages. Their relationship is one of my favorites in history, and Richard captured it beautifully. I was excited to see all my favorites join us for this series also, including Mycroft, Mrs. Hudson, and Lestrade.

The Case, oh my the case. This case had Sherlock stunned, but of course that just made our favorite detective work all the more harder. I love that the more intelligent a criminal, the more respect Sherlock has for them. This case was one of my favorites of all the Sherlock cases. It had suspense, intrigue, and surprise. The entire thing was beautifully written

5 big beautiful stars for this Sherlock Tale!

Wonderfully done Richard!!!

Fun Reading Challenges

Do you have trouble picking a book to read? We’ve all been there. With so many amazing books in the world, it can get difficult to pick just one. When the struggle is real over here, we find a reading challenge.

What is a reading Challenge? Well that’s simple, it’s a challenge you set up for yourself, or with others, and it creates a sort of list of books for you to read. There are many different challenges out in the world, but I will discuss a few of my personal favorites here. You can also find multiple Book/Reading Groups on Goodreads that participate in such Challenges.

1. My first favorite and one of the more easy is the “Initial” Challenge. What you do is a pick a word, make this word significant to something. For instance it’s the month of August, depending where you are of course this will have different meanings. For me when I think of August I think of Harvest. So take that world Harvest and write it down like so.

H

A

R

V

E

S

T

Then you can choose either author names or book titles that start with the letters in the word. Example, for H you can read Harry Potter, or something from Hemingway.

There are so many ways you can do this. You could do your name, favorite color, or favorite flower. You don’t have to use the Authors name or title either, you could try the main Characters name or the Villains name. Either way, it makes selecting books a little easier when you are limited to a letter.

2. Another Challenge people seem to enjoy is more of a role playing type challenge. You create a point system, a quest system, and a character, then gain a certain amount of points, by reading books, to complete those quests.

For instance, a book with 50-100 pages will be 1 point, a book with 100-150 2 points, 150-200 pages 3 points, so on. Say you create a quest that your character needs to find a hidden object. (your character being you.) In order to find that item you need 3 points. You go back to your point system and find a book within range. You find a book with 150-200 pages, read it, then complete your “quest”. Then it’s on to the next quest.

This one is fun because you are creating your own story while your reading. We find that people who play DnD really excel at this type of challenge. You can make it as difficult or easy as you want. I have personally known people to spend months on this type of Reading Challenge and finishing it is a massive accomplishment.

3. Lastly, and one of my favorites is the traveling challenge. Now I am from the US so I will use that as reference, but there are so many different ways to do this challenge it doesn’t matter where you’re from.

I have always wanted to travel. A long peaceful road trip across the states, seeing all this country has to offer. Unfortunately that’s a little harder then it sounds. With kids, bills, and well, life it probably won’t happen for a long time.

This challenge can help you see the world. What I would do to start is write down all the states in the US. You can specify certain cities also, but that will make this much more difficult. Then you find a book that is based in those states.

Example

– Maine – It, by Stephen King

Because that book is based in that State, you have now visited it. So on and so forth.

You can travel the world this way doing countries instead of states. You can do planets, or made up worlds. There are many ways to twist this challenge to your liking.

Hope you guys enjoyed reading my first blog on here! Thanks so much for all the support. I will have my first review up at the beginning of next week, (unless I finish it earlier). I also have a few more books planned including an early review before release, and an author interview. Until then, Read On!
